Abstract

Background: Instagram and TikTok have become important channels for obtaining health information among Generation Z. The accessibility and visual characteristics of social media may support health information seeking, but the quality and credibility of online content can also affect health-related decisions.

Aims: This study aimed to determine the relationship between Instagram and TikTok social media content and health service-seeking among Generation Z health students at Universitas Muhammadiyah Lamongan.

Methods: A quantitative analytical study with a cross-sectional design was conducted at the Faculty of Health Sciences, Universitas Muhammadiyah Lamongan, from June to August 2026. A total of 400 respondents were selected using purposive sampling. Data were collected using a 5-point Likert questionnaire and analyzed using univariate analysis and Spearman’s rho correlation.

Result:Instagram and TikTok social media content was most frequently categorized as moderate (39.5%), while health service-seeking was also most frequently categorized as moderate (48.3%). Spearman’s rho showed a correlation coefficient of 0.544 with p < 0.001, indicating a statistically significant, positive, moderate relationship.

Conclusion: Better Instagram and TikTok content was associated with higher health service-seeking among Generation Z. However, social media content is not the only factor influencing health service-seeking, emphasizing the importance of digital health literacy and credible health information.
