Abstract

Background: Swallowing difficulty (dysphagia) may occur after stroke and can be associated with aspiration, dehydration, and malnutrition. Acupuncture has been investigated as a complementary intervention for post-stroke dysphagia, but a single case report cannot establish treatment efficacy.

Objective: To describe the acupuncture care and the changes documented in one patient with reported swallowing difficulty following stroke at AHC Bogor Independent Practice. Methods: This descriptive case study involved one 55-year-old man who reported a history of stroke approximately one year before the initial assessment. Six acupuncture sessions were provided, beginning on 1 January 2026. Data were collected using a Client Data Sheet and the traditional examinations of inspection (Wang), listening and smelling (Wen), inquiry (Wen), and palpation (Qie). The recorded points were GV26, GB20, GB12, TE17, ST9, and CV23.

Results: At the first assessment, the participant reported difficulty swallowing food and liquids, frequent choking when drinking water, and a sensation of food sticking in the throat. At the sixth assessment, he reported that swallowing soft foods and liquids was easier, choking occurred less frequently, and the throat-sticking sensation had decreased. Appetite and sleep were also reported to have improved.

Conclusion: Improvements in swallowing-related complaints were reported after six acupuncture sessions. However, further studies using standardized swallowing assessments and controlled designs are needed to evaluate the potential benefits of acupuncture as a complementary intervention in post-stroke rehabilitation.
