Micronutrients have an important impact on the male reproductive system, especially regarding the sperm concentration, which is a vital indicator of male fertility. This review aims to find and discuss the results of clinical studies done in the last five years on the impact of micronutrient supplementation on sperm concentration in men. This study takes a qualitative literature review approach by compiling articles obtained from peer-reviewed scientific journals published during the last five years, emphasizing only on micronutrient intake and sperm concentration in men. Following this approach, the study purposively benchmarked 15 reviewed clinical trials and research articles to document recurring themes and factors associated with the level of micronutrient intake and sperm quality. The findings suggest that the mentioned micronutrients have positive effects due to their role in reducing oxidative stress and improving cellular function within the testes. Furthermore, some antioxidants seem to have protective effects on sperm DNA, which is crucial for enhancing fertility. These findings notwithstanding, differences in the design of the studies, including the participants, their characteristics, the dosage of the supplements given, underscore the variability well designed clinical trials are still needed to define optimal protocols. The results emphasize the importance of adding nutritional therapies as adjunct strategies in treating male fertility issues. This review is important to clinicians and researchers as well as health policymakers interested in formulating strategies to enhance reproductive health in men by employing evidence-based techniques and micronutrient supplementation.
